Brightly coloured mannequins are adorning the streets and rooftops of Wellington in the latest display of support for the Rugby World Cup.

The abstract art is a collaboration between a bar owner and local artist, who wanted to show their backing in an unusual and attention grabbing way.

John Coleman, owner of Hummingbird bar and café, says he approached artist Sue Lund with the concept after he saw an installation of her vibrant 3-D art around a year ago.

“Hummingbird has always supported Wellington and its event, always got behind it – this continues that history,” Mr Coleman says.

“It’s to create a talking point for Wellington, show that we get behind events and make things happen in Wellington.”

A rugby team worth of colourful players have taken to the roof of an inner-city Wellington bar to compete in the Weird Alice Cup.

The psychedelic art installation is the work of Brooklyn-basedartist Sue Lund, who has created 17 of the life-size figures to cavort on the roof of Courtenay Place’s Hummingbird Bar and stand sentry at the door.

Owner John Coleman said the aim of the installation was to “celebrate our wonderful city of Wellington,” as it prepared for the Rugby World Cup, which he cheekily dubbed “the game of no name”.

“We are showing all the incredibly bright colours of all the international teams visiting New Zealand for the cup.”

The mannequins had received good reactions from passersby, and Mr Coleman, who is also the president of the Courtenay Quarter Accord, challenged the council to match his colourful contribution.

“I would have thought they were going to put some colourful lights in the middle of the road or something like that.”

Lund said she had bought unwanted mannequins from Trade Me and clothing stores before painting them with acrylic and a layer of polyurethane to make the installation.

Newtown artist Sue Lund has been painting the outside of the Learning Connexion building in Taita for more than three years, but she still hasn’t lost her passion for the task.

“I love my job – it is the best thing in the world,” she says.

Despite having such a large canvas, Ms Lund prefers to work without a master plan or design.

“The paint works out where it is going; each colour decides what colour it wants to be next to.”

Ms Lund is a graduate of The Learning Connexion International School of Art and Creativity and her free and unrestricted approach to painting seems to sum up the school’s philosophy.
